The 3rd Annual GameBuilder Halloween Competition!

It's that time again for the Annual GameBuilder Halloween Competition! This year, is going to be better than ever, and we have some awesome prizes, courtesy of Clickteam.

HHC3

1st Place: $150 Cash!

2nd Place: Clickteam Shirt and Mug

3rd Place: Clickteam Mousepad and Keyring

This year the theme is "Happy Halloween"! Characters can die, but they must die happily. Games can be simple, and don't need to be particularly extensive. Just submit them to GB as you would any other game and note in the description that it is for the Halloween competition. The deadline for entries will be November 2nd at 11:59 PM. Games can be made with any software or programming languages. You should submit the finished game, not the source code/project file. The games will be judged by GameBuilder admins, and the games with the three highest scores will win!

Scoring Info

There will be three judges. Each judge will give each game a score out of 10 for happiness. In addition, each judge will give each game a score in their assigned category.

Graphics (15 points) - Judged by Adam
Gameplay (15 points) - Judged by Ricky
Sound/Music (10 points) - Judged by KetchupMaster

The total score for each game will be calculated as follows:
Total Score out of 50 points = Graphics Score + Gameplay Score + Sound/Music Score + (Happiness Score 1 + Happiness Score 2 + Happiness Score 3)/3

So you want Roly Poly Pumpkin to win, huh? Pity, I had already started on a darker game.

jokeman248's picture

So it can't be in a zip folder??? Cause sometimes when I submit them as stand-alone, they have glitches.

KetchupMaster's picture

it can be a zip folder, but there needs to be an exe or some other executable file in it, not an mfa or something like that

Jacob's picture

Is it okay if a certain life decisions determine whether they die happily or not? I would like to have a few alternate endings. The gameplay won't change, but if all goes well there will be a few cutscenes at the end for different choices in-game.

OK some questions:

1 Can we get know how the game will be judged, what is the most important, total feeling, graphics, not bugged?

2 Is there any restriction in copyrights (like not ours music or libs)

3 Are there any restrictions about game size, game genre, amount of violance?

4 What about attempting teams and several projects by one person/team?

4a If teams how many people in one team?

5 Does happy mean sweet or we can understand it in different way (I mean should it be dedicated also for children/teenagers or can be only adult like?)

6 What about games with a bit/lot of controversy will they be banned?

7 Can we represent some institution like University for the competition or it must be person/team based?

7a if Uni, can there attempts few squads?

Adam's picture

1- The game will be judged on graphics, programming skills, gameplay and happiness. There will be a proper score system worked out soon, but for now if you're entering just try to make the best, happiest Halloween game you can Smiling

2- Like with most GB competitions, try not to use copyrighted material, we'd expect you not to anyway with a well made game. And sounds and graphics from libraries are okay, original are even better and may get you higher marks.

3-No restrictions there. Just remember, if there's any violence it has to be happy, for example the blood is rainbow coloured, or the character's face is "green" upon dying Smiling

4- Sure, you can work in teams, but remember one person will be recieving the prizes, it is up to you what to do with them.

5-Interpret happy how you wish, but remember judges will also have their own ideas of what "happy" is, so don't try to go too crazy I guess.

6-Please nothing too shocking. Gamebuilder (believe it or not) is a family site welcoming people of all ages, religions and nationalities. If you have any queries about what is classed as "too shocking" send a PM to KetchupMaster, Ricky or myself and we'll discuss it and get back to you Big Smile

7-Yes, you can represent an institution, I dont see the harm in that.

7a- Sure.

Adam's picture

Oh, and Darkesoft that's up to you, that would be all part of the gameplay I guess.

Fanotherpg's picture

And what about making several games by one person/team?

And how big teams can be?

You missed those two Smiling

UrbanMonk's picture

Should I enter this compo?

Adam's picture

Yes, you can enter more than one game. Teams can be as big as you like, don't see how that effects it.

And yes, you should enter Smiling

JK

Best of luck to all of you.

Watermelon876's picture

My game's going to be all but impossible to win!

RickyRombo's picture

Watermelon876's picture

You stole my idea!!! Too bad, they're hafta' be 2 ghost games in the compo!

RickyRombo's picture

No, I mean the game itself is a ghost.... catching my drift?

Wiiman's picture

I'm a little dissapointed by the thought of making a happy halloween game, when I think halloween I think of scarieness not happy thoughts, but I'll enter if I have the chance!

Watermelon876's picture

Unfortunately I don't catch your- OH!!! I get it now!

Jacob's picture

Indeed, I might not enter after all. My game is anything but happy, even after 8 days of work.

On the other hand, I probably will continue the game as it is and then hope the other aspects of the game are good enough to win favour from the judges.

Martin_Bodger's picture

Got characters... just need to plot now.;__;!

Fanotherpg's picture

And where we should place it? Can it be sent to organizers email address?

KetchupMaster's picture

Just submit it to GameBuilder like any other game and note in the description that it is for the Halloween Compo. We will hold all entries from showing up on the site until the deadline.

KetchupMaster's picture

Details about judging have been added to the post.

Eliyahu's picture

Why do each of the judges have to judge a different aspect? I liked it last time how each one gave scored it all and they were added up or averaged or whatever. This way seems a little inefficient to get the right scores. Idk, I just like it better seeing each judge give a full report on what they liked and didnt. Anyone else agree?

KetchupMaster's picture

Last time it was a mess and took forever to judge because we had 6 scores for every game from all 3 judges, so we had over a hundred different scores to keep track of and calculate together. This way we'll be able to judge them faster and the scores will be more accurate, because each judge is specialized in their category. For example, Adam knows a lot about graphics so he is more suited to judge the graphics than Ricky and I are. And Ricky is always coming up with creative ideas for gameplay. I think the scores will be a lot more accurate this way.

Eliyahu's picture

I dont see how this is any faster... each judge still has to play each game, then they just edit the game page with their rating, and in the end, the scores are added up... It works the same each way but this way they only rate one section. I just think it's nice to get more voice on a specific area. Like now what Adam thinks on my graphics will affect 33% of my game's rating approxiamately. The old way it would count for 11% of the rating. This insures that he doesn't have a biased viewpoint and then if he was the only one who didnt like it, then I dont lose so much, in case the other 2 liked them.

KetchupMaster's picture

It's faster because we each have to rate only two categories for each game, instead of 6. Either way, each judge determines 33% of your score (approximately), not 11%. This way, the 33% that they determine is in a category in which the judge is skilled, so the scores can be more accurate.

Eliyahu's picture

Ok. Hopefully all goes well. And the 11% is what they contribute to each section, like if one judge for some reason hates the music while the others love it, only 11% is taken off

Ricky's picture

Judging should be fast. Depending on the amount of games, it could be done in 1 to 2 weeks.

Jacob's picture

@Eliyahu It's 16.7 percent, not 11

Anyway, I believe I will enter. My game is about 1/3 done, but all of the polishing and design is done for 2/3rds of it, so I should be able to finish in time. Right now it's just a matter of getting the storyline implemented. It's based on a dream I had while thinking about a nightmare I had after reading a story I found on a forum. I have no idea what the story or nightmare was about, but if it had anything to do with the dream it's pretty scary. I hope I succeed in putting that onto paper. Er, MMF2.

Fanotherpg's picture

Fast question if someone won't end game at time can he publish demo version which will take part in the compo?

KetchupMaster's picture

Yes, demo versions are okay. But as it says the news post, games don't have to be really extensive.

Fanotherpg's picture

Yea, yea I know but I just wanted to be sure.

Jacob's picture

Maybe a poll should be created to show who all is entering the competition. Similar to the one done in '07.
