There won't be an inevitable "should've been the only one" version because on the basis of the paradigm, such games only exist once per region. The better game for Kanto was Yellow, which is why there is no better version of Leafgreen or Firered, and the better version of Gold and Silver was Crystal. In addition, remaking the better game as opposed to the two originals is not done because the games sell better in sets, and such remakes are otherwise unnecessary because whatever features were introduced by the better game will most likely have been integrated with the series as a whole or in the remakes themselves. To not upgrade because no one else around you has a game is now a moot point because of Nintendo WFC, and to say that the games went downhill from Emerald without any evidence as to how (because I can't imagine how) is something I don't like.
I voted Heart Gold, by the way, because I originally owned Gold and everyone knows that is the more aesthetically pleasing color.
It's not moot. Online play and having friends around you with the same game aren't even close. They aren't even trying to accomplish the same thing, really. I don't mean having an enemy to defeat. It's not that no nearby friends is the only thing keeping me from upgrading--it's that that is the only reason I WOULD have to upgrade.
SoulSilver simply because I'm pretty darn sure that will be the minority. That's because the only other person I know who still plays pokemon will be getting HeartGold. I have long awaited the Gold/Silver remakes. Crystal was the best Pokemon game, so I wanted to play the original versions.

Heart Gold for me...
Neither, Pokemon went downhill after Emerald.
Wait... they aren't going to remake Crystal? ;__;
EDIT: and I don't have a DS...
lloks like I overestimated how many Pokemon trainers we have...
I'd go for Heart Gold, but I'll probably wait for the inevitable combination/better/should've been the only one released version.
Until they reinvent Pokemon, I see no reason to move up from Fire Red. Since nobody around me has any Pokemon games.
Leaf Green was my favorite of all the games
Emerald was the best for me it had a ton of surprises, like secret hideouts.

Why gold? If I were to choose I'd say SOUL over HEART any day...
