Are there any generic hints and tips to help? Should I start with a beat or tune? What sounds good? Minor notes? What sort of music do people like listening to in a game? How much difference does it make?
OR if you have many thousands of pounds to spend get cubase SX3, a bunch of VST's a keyboard and a supernova synthesizer
... OR if your brother already has all that, use HIS!
Yeah, but I just looked at a pic of Cubebase SX3. It looks very complicated. He is a beginner I presume (to music making) so is there a less complicated program?
This is the pic I saw:

actually cubase isn't as complicated as you might think but yeah its not exactly designed for total noobs. Having said that, i'm technically a noob but I could mostly get it to do what i wanted
.
I'm using FL Studio. I just mean, does anybody have experience with music making and could possibly share some useful tips?
From that list, here are the ones which ring most true to me after a couple of hours of practice.
Never listen to the same loop for longer than 10 minutes
Write as many songs as you can and pick the best
Do something every day. Even if all you do is make a beat or write some lyrics or a bassline or whatever, do something. Even if you just have a few minutes a day to spare, the material you have quickly builds up
Listen. Listen very carefully. No. REALLY listen.
(and finally...)
You may think you're playing your instrument, but what you're really playing is the audience (I'm sure this applies to good musicians who can tailor their music to suit an audience, for me it's hard enough just getting a song sorted.)
So you found it helpful?
I've sat in front of modplug tracker before, dragging notes onto the screen trying to make a tune, but it's too rigid and fiddly and too slow. What you really need is an instrument so you can immediately start playing what crops up in your head.
Unless you can't play an instrument. Like me.
Wow, that's a lot of questions! I recommend using something like Jam Studio to start off with.
