New Nifflas Game Trailer

Nifflas has recently released a video of his latest Project "The Great Work".

From the short video we can see the gameplay appears to be a real cross between Knytt and Saira. Knytt's gameplay and speed with Saira's graphical elements, perhaps creating the perfect blend?

A promising looking project indeed!

i dunno. his games are all starting to look the same to me. not that that's bad, i just wish he'd try something new.

I disagree Cecil. I really think Nifflas manages to do something about the explorer/adventure genre, and just because he uses elements from previous works doesn't mean it's the exact same thing. Of course, some people like active games more than what Nifflas does, but that all depends on taste ;)

you missed the point completely.

i have no distaste in his games. i really enjoyed them. and i dont disagree. i said "not that that's bad, i just wish he'd try something new."

i also never said they were all exactly the same. i said they were all starting to look the same. all his games are pretty much the same, albeit with (slightly) different art styles, and maybe some added/changed game play. but more or less they all feel the same.

i just wish he would do something different. break the mold. or add something to his games that completely change how they are played.

also, he needs to get knytt stories on to portable devices. id give anything to have knytt stories on my psp alongside cave story.

Now, this is where the story behind the game takes an unusual twist. You see the game is being based on a documentary that’s actually in production right now. A documentary which is following a young IT-saleman as they leaves his job to pursue a career in alchemy. Don’t ask me how the game was spawned out of that, cause i have no idea.

I agree with your original comment Cecil and I don't think you need to clarify it further.

I think people who make games have a certain genre of gaming in which they specialise in, and it's hard to break out of that.

I could never make a platform game, because I don't enjoy playing platform games. Other people would never make a strategy game because they have never played them.

It's would be great for Nifflas to focus his many talents on a different genre, but all the same if Nifflas finds himself most creative when making platformers then I'm just happy he's still inspired to make the games. Many programmers struggle to finish a game, let alone games that span many genres.

Randall have rocked the stickfigure look since xkcd started, and the art style and story direction of questionable content have slowly changed over time. My games are similar because I'm trying to become an expert with a certain kind of games and really try to make the atmospheric exploration platformer fun by testing out different concepts. In Knytt I tried heavy exploration with low focus on enemies and challenge, in Knytt Stories I tried heavy focus on level editing and expandability. In Saira I tried heavy focus on puzzles and momentum based player movements, in WaDF I tried to integrate puzzles with the shape of the world and the player abilities. In FiNCK I tested out Super Mario Bros 2 style movement and more linear levels with a non-linear "twist", and in NightSky I learnt to use physics. It's definitely not the same, the games just share many elements because it's created by a human being with a certain taste. Please just let me stick to the games I like and really learn to get good with that. I try out non-platformers for my mini games which you can also download from my website.

The indie game scene have so many developers experimenting with new concepts and completely revolutionary types of gameplay. You don't want or need me to head down that road, because there's no guarantee that would magically cause me to create games you would enjoy better, and there's no generic rule that states that a developer must try out new genres just as a musical artist doesn't need to change music genre for every album, or even at all in their entire career. A metal band can stay a metal band. There are so many developers that can offer variation for you already.
