Id say combine. Use the lighter colour grass to highlight where the grass is hit by light from a certain direction?

or to highlight areas where washing up liquid has been spilled everywhere and the other one to highlight areas where people have shat on it.

I think the one on the left looks like it's at dusk and the one at the right looks like it's just before noon.

I agree, use both but at different times of day or for shadow. The one on the left could be in shadow and the right one could be in the sun.

The one on the right is a lot clearer, but as the others have said, it depends on what time of day etc you want to use.

That's given me an idea for my new game.
how about you use both types of grass for different bits of the game so that there isn't one ground colour the whole time.
