I am curious of people's opinions of Java. My questions are...

1) Do you currently have Java 6 installed on your machine, if not, is this intentional?

2) Would you prefer a .exe to a .jar file?

3) Do you like the MMF2 Java runtime (if you've tried it)?

4) Would you install Java for the first time after downloading a game, or would you not bother playing the game?

5) If Java was missing on your machine, would you be happy for the application to download and install java for you?

6) Do you have any specific problems with Java?

7) Do you see any particular advantage to using Java?

My answers to these questions are

1) Yes.
2) Doesn't bother me.
3) I tested a game on my mobile but it was fairly limited. It might be interesting to develop extensions for due to the vast number of libraries natively available in Java.
4) It would just remind me to install Java and I would probably do it then.
5) It depends, I would prefer to install it myself. I don't mind if it installs as long as it doesn't install the annoying auto updater and no toolbars or stuffies like that are installed with it.
6) The JRE is 15mb compressed. This isn't bad for all that Java does but I am paranoid that a Java dependency causes average users to be reluctant to trying out your game or application.
7) As game developers, the ability to write our games once and to have them running on Windows, Mac and Linux straight off is a major bonus. Since most people develop games for Windows, Mac and Linux users might be persuaded into playing our games, so potentially more people are playing our games. As long as the user has Java on his/her machine the java files are generally pretty small, so less of your bandwidth is used and Sun bears the cost of distributing the JRE.

1) Yes.
2) Exe.
3) Nope.
4) Depends on the game (meaning how hot the screenshots look).
5) No, would make me paranoid.
6) I can't name a single Java game I like (But I would love to see one).
7) Multiplatformas.

And the others don't care at all.

1. Yes
2. Don't really care. Just the quality of the game is all that matters to me.
3. Haven't used it that much, but it's worked for what I have done.
4. Depends how badly I want to play the game.
5. Yeah, I think that'd be convenient.
6. No
7. Works on linux, mac, windows.
